What is Google Authenticator and what is its role in my account?

Google Authenticator is an additional security measure used when logging into your account. When entering the character selection screen, you will be asked to enter a verification code shown on your Google Authenticator app. Simply put, you will need both your account password and Google Authenticator code in order to login to your account.
